On Sunday, August 6th, 2023 I received a phone call from my husband, while at work at Lackland AFB, notifying me that our apartment building was engulfed in flames. I remember my hands shaking as I gripped the steering wheel, desperately trying to get home. My husband's voice still echoed in my mind; the fear and urgency in his tone was chilling. As I turned the corner onto our street, the sight that met my eyes was horrific. Flames leapt skyward from our apartment building, painting the evening sky in shades of orange and black. I parked my car and ran towards the crowd gathered at a safe distance. My eyes scanned the crowd frantically, searching for my family. Relief washed over me as I finally found them; my husband, my younger sister, and our two dogs, standing together, unharmed but visibly shaken. Our home was being consumed by flames right before our eyes. Later that night, we found ourselves staying a in guest bedroom of a close relative, still in shock and struggling to process what had happened. We clung to each other, finding comfort in the shared tragedy. We were left with nothing but the clothes on our backs. This fire took our belongings but it didn't take our spirit, our resilience, and most importantly, our love for each other. It changed us. It forced us to face the unpredictability of life, the fragility of our existence. A day later, we will continue moving forward, one day at a time, reshaping our life from the ashes of the past into a future filled with hope. Yesterday will forever be etched in our minds. It was a devastating loss, a painful memory.
As anything helps, the money donated will go towards finding our family new living arrangements and anything left over will go towards groceries, air mattresses, and any other necessities we might need to get back on our feet.
If anyone is able to donate it is very appreciated. If you are unable to donate, we just ask that you share our story.
Thank you!
