Ride for Reconciliation
As we're sure you've all seen in the news, multiple mass graves have been found recently at residential schools across Canada. These tragic discoveries are shining a light on the systemic Colonial oppression and genocide of Indigenous people that has sadly not yet been relegated to the history books.
After visiting a memorial and seeing hundreds of pairs of kids shoes, we were at a loss for what we could do. So we decided we're going to bike quite a long way and hopefully raise some money while we're at it. 215km for the 215 bodies discovered at the residential school in Kamloops, BC (thanks Shawnee and Devin for the idea). The proceeds will be going towards the Indian Residential Schools Survivors Society (IRSSS).
IRSSS provides essential services to Residential School Survivors, their families, and those dealing with intergenerational traumas. These impacts are most evident in the high numbers of First Nations people incarcerated, homeless, on social assistance, or unemployed. The impacts of these schools are severe and longlasting, but the resources allocated to mitigate them are low.
Spare a few bucks if you can. It's for a great cause and we'll pedal our hearts out all the way round the Lower Mainland. Our route is going to be roughly:
- East Vancouver
- Maple Ridge
- Mission
- Abbotsford
- White Rock
- Tsawwassen
- New Westminster
- East Vancouver
This will take us through the unceded traditional territories of xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), Səl̓ílwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations, sc̓əwaθən məsteyəxʷ (Tsawwassen) Nations and the Stó:lō (Kwantlen) Nations. This is such a beautiful part of the world, and we're grateful to be able to call it home.
