Help Bonnie the Survivor Get the Care She Deserves

Meet Bonnie — a senior soul who has already survived far more than most ever will.

Just a few weeks ago, Bonnie was a pregnant stray surviving on the unforgiving streets of South Dallas, near Bonnie View Rd — an area locals grimly refer to as “Body View.” Her resilience was already obvious, but no one could have predicted just how much this sweet girl would have to endure.

Her Journey Begins

Bonnie was finally trapped by Dallas Animal Services (DAS) on Tuesday, 9/9. On 9/13, she was spayed and began treatment for heartworm, a condition all too common in strays. Just a few days later, on 9/19, complications from the spay were discovered — both of her mammary glands above the incision had filled with infection, forming a painful abscess. She was immediately started on antibiotics.

But things took a heartbreaking turn.

A Sudden Decline

On Sunday, 9/28, Bonnie suddenly worsened. Her belly became severely bloated, and she was rushed to Dallas Animal Urgent Care (DAUC), where a possible foreign object was suspected. She received fluids and anti-nausea medications and was sent home for monitoring.

Over the next 48 hours, Bonnie made multiple trips to City Vet White Rock for repeated x-rays, fluids, and more medications. But her condition kept getting worse.

By Tuesday morning, she was hospitalized. Within hours, she began to rapidly decline — her belly was filling with fluid, and emergency diagnostics showed something was terribly wrong.

The Emergency Surgery That Saved Her Life

An ultrasound revealed free fluid in her abdomen. When vets took a sample, it was sanguinous (bloody) — a clear sign something inside was rupturing. The only option was emergency surgery, despite the huge risk due to her recent heartworm treatment.

During surgery, they discovered Bonnie had a stump pyometra — a life-threatening infection of uterine tissue that was left behind after the spay. (This is an extremely dangerous but rare complication that can be fatal if not treated immediately.)

She made it through surgery — barely — and spent the night in critical condition.

The Harsh Reality

The next morning, Bonnie’s condition remained fragile. She was in labored breathing, her blood pressure was dangerously low, and her labwork was severely off. She required stronger antibiotics and a plasma transfusion to stabilize her.

Through all the diagnostics, we learned more about who Bonnie really is:

* She’s not 2 years old as DAS originally estimated — she’s a senior gal, likely 8+ years old

* Her spine is fusing and her hips are in terrible shape

* And as if that weren’t enough, she even has a BB pellet lodged in her tail — a painful reminder of her past life on the streets

Still, She Fights

Despite all of this, Bonnie continues to fight for her life. Her spirit is undeniable. After surviving the streets, neglect, abuse, and now a major emergency surgery — she’s telling us she wants to live.

And she deserves to.

How You Can Help

Bonnie is being fostered through DAS, but they do not have the resources to provide the level of medical care she needs. If she had been returned to DAS for treatment, she would have been euthanized.

This has all happened very quickly, and there was no time to find a rescue group for backing. Everything has come out-of-pocket so far, and we need your help to continue giving Bonnie the care she needs to survive.

* Plasma transfusion

* Future heartworm treatments (she still needs two more rounds)

* Pain management & senior care for her hips and spine
