My name is Karla Galvis, I am 39 years old, and I am from Venezuela, specifically from San Cristobal city, Táchira State. I am single, I am publicist, but currently I work from home selling desserts. I do not have children and live with my mother, who is 69 years old. My father died due to Lung Cancer 3 years ago.
On August 2015, I decided to do my first mammogram, which threw as result a Simple Cyst of 6 mm in the right breast. According to the radiologist, it was not necessary to be aware because it was a normal finding, and that I should to follow my annual routine check. On February 2016 while I was doing self-examination, I felt something strange that previously I had not felt, but I did not pay attention. The next month when I performed the self-examination again, I felt an increase in volume and Induration, so I decided to go to the doctor. The doctor did a breast ultrasound and saw that the cyst became a big mass, 4 centimeters in diameter. I made all necessary exams and a biopsy of the mass.
The diagnosis was a DUCTAL CARCINOMA in-situ, stage IIB. I received this bad news with concern and sadness because I knew what my father suffered during his disease until he died; however, I became strong, faithful, hopeful, and positive, so I decided to face it with the best disposition. To begin the treatment, the doctor planned a surgery. She performed a Radical mastectomy in the right breast, placement of an immediate breast prosthesis, and resection of peripheral ganglia. Posteriorly, I began chemotherapy. I received 8 Chemotherapies, which were applied every 21 days. The application of chemotherapies was a bit stressful as my country is passing through a critical political, economic and social situation. Venezuela is in humanitarian crisis and there is a considerable shortage of drugs. Therefore, patients with Cancer suffer to get drugs for chemotherapy. In some opportunities, I had to buy the drugs in Colombia, for a very high cost due to the currency exchange.
Once I completed chemotherapies with success, despite adversity, the doctor indicated some radiotherapies to continue with my healing process. In the city where I reside, exist only one equipment for radiotherapy, which, is out of service since several months ago. For this reason, I had to move to another city, Valencia, looking for an option to continue the treatment. I am staying in a friends’ house, who gently opened the doors of their home. In this city, there is only one equipment of radiotherapy operating well (Radiotherapy Unit “Gurve Group”). The treatment consists of 25 radiotherapies. The cost of the treatment is very high, in addition to the extra cost that involve being away from my home. Additionally, after I will complete radiotherapies, I must continue with preventive treatment for the next 5 years.
Unfortunately, I do not have money to cover the treatment. My family has given me economic support through their possibilities, but the bad economic situation in my country is affecting everybody. It is really complicated to raise this huge quantity of money in a short time to continue with the following phase of my treatment, which is essential for my cure. Time plays a crucial role in the evolution of this disease; therefore, I need to continue with my treatment as soon as possible.
I really have strong desires to live and I have many reasons to keep fighting and move forward on this path. God is my strength and support when I feel like fall, and I have put all my faith and my confidence in that I will go out victorious in this battle. Mi nombre es Karla Galvis, tengo 39 años, soy de Venezuela, específicamente de la ciudad de San Cristóbal, estado Táchira. Soy soltera, de profesión Publicista, pero actualmente trabajo desde casa vendiendo dulces y postres. No tengo hijos y vivo con mi madre, quien tiene 69 años. Mi padre falleció de Cáncer de Pulmón hace 3 años, a quien me dedique por completo en sus últimos meses de vida.
En agosto del 2015, decidí realizarme mi primer estudio mamográfico, el cual arrojo como resultado un quiste simple líquido, de 6mm en la mama derecha, según el radiólogo no era de alarmar, pues era algo normal y que debía seguir mi chequeo anual de rutina. En febrero de este año mientras me realizaba el autoexamen me sentí algo extraño que anteriormente no había sentido, pero no hice caso a ello. Al siguiente mes cuando volví a realizarme el autoexamen, me sentí un aumento de volumen e indurado, así que decidí ir al médico. Al realizarme el eco mamario se logró ver que el quiste se convirtió en una masa que media 4cm de diámetro. Me realizaron los estudios pertinentes y una biopsia de la masa.
El diagnóstico fue CARCINOMA DUCTAL in situ, estadio IIB. Esta noticia la recibí con mucha preocupación y tristeza por lo que sabía que había pasado mi padre y su desenlace, sin embargo, me llené de fortaleza, fe, y positivismo y decidí enfrentarlo con la mejor disposición. Para iniciar el tratamiento me planificaron una intervención quirúrgica, donde me realizaron una Mastectomía Radical modificada en la mama derecha con colocación de una prótesis mamaria inmediata y resección de ganglios periféricos. Posteriormente inicie el tratamiento de Quimioterapia, me realizaron 8 Quimioterapias, las cuales, me aplicaron cada 21 días. La aplicación de las quimioterapias fue un poco estresante debido a que mi país está pasando por una crítica situación política, económica y social, encontrándose en crisis humanitaria. Existe una gran escasez de medicamentos, por lo tanto, los pacientes oncológicos padecemos para conseguir los medicamentos para la quimioterapia. En algunas oportunidades tuve que adquirirlos en Colombia, a un costo mucho más elevado debido al cambio de la moneda.
Una vez culminado el tratamiento de quimioterapia con éxito a pesar de las adversidades, me indicaron tratamiento de Radioterapia para continuar con mi proceso de sanación. En la ciudad donde resido existe un solo equipo para radioterapia, el cual, se encuentra fuera de servicio desde hace varios meses, por lo tanto, tuve que trasladarme a la ciudad de Valencia para realizarme el tratamiento. Me encuentro hospedada en casa de unos amigos, quienes gentilmente me abrieron las puertas de su hogar. En esta ciudad existe solo una clínica que cuenta con el equipo de radioterapia operativo (Unidad de Radioterapia del Grupo Gurve). El tratamiento consiste de 25 radioterapias. El costo del tratamiento es bastante elevado, además de los gastos adicionales que implican estar lejos de mi hogar. Adicionalmente, posterior al tratamiento de Radioterapia debo continuar con un tratamiento preventivo por los próximos 5 años.
Desafortunadamente no cuento con el dinero necesario para continuar con mi tratamiento. Mi familia me ha apoyado económicamente dentro de sus posibilidades, pero la situación económica de mi país nos golpea a todos por igual y es bastante complicado reunir una suma de dinero tan alta en corto tiempo para continuar con la siguiente fase del tratamiento, la cual es indispensable para poder curarme. El tiempo juega un rol crucial en la evolución de esta enfermedad, por lo tanto, necesito continuar con mi tratamiento en la brevedad posible.
Tengo muchas ganas de vivir y muchas razones por las cuales luchar y seguir adelante en este camino. Dios es mi fortaleza y mi apoyo cuando siento ganas de caer, y en él tengo puesta toda mi fe y mi confianza en que saldré victoriosa de esta batalla. En este momento me veo en la necesidad de acudir a ustedes muy respetuosamente para solicitarles desde lo más profundo de mi corazón su ayuda.
