Alejandro's Recovery from Severe Head Injury

On Saturday, March 18th, Alejandro was out with friends celebrating St. Patrick’s Day in downtown Chicago. He was visiting for the weekend from Southern California where he is a Physician Assistant Student. At about 2 am on Saturday morning, Alejandro was physically assaulted outside of a nightclub in River North, Chicago.

After the attack, he was rushed to Northwestern Memorial Hospital where he was taken in for emergency surgery due to severe head trauma that caused bleeding and swelling around his brain. During the surgery, a section of his skull was temporarily removed so the surgeon could access and remove the hematoma.

Alejandro has been in the Neuro-ICU for the last four days. He is currently being moved to a step-down unit where he will continue to be closely monitored. He is making tremendous progress with the help of the amazing staff at NMH and his devoted family. The plan is for him to be moved to The Shirley Ryan AbilityLab for brain injury recovery as soon as this weekend. Looking ahead, in the next few weeks to months, a follow-up surgery called a cranioplasty will be needed to replace the missing piece of the skull that was removed during the emergency surgery.

All money raised will help Alejandro with his ongoing care and rehabilitation expenses and support him during his recovery.

ABOUT ALEJANDRO:

Alejandro, 26, grew up in Chicago. He attended the University of Madison Wisconsin and earned a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology. He then attended the University of Illinois Chicago where he received a Master of Science in Medical Physiology. He is currently a Physician Assistant student and has just started his clinical rotations. He completed his White Coat Ceremony in January of this year and is a dedicated student who is passionate about helping others and promoting a healthy lifestyle. We are sure that he will work hard in rehab to gain all of his strength back. With your help, we can support Alejandro on his healing journey.
