Last week, our friend Ernesto was severely injured in a fall that resulted in a skull fracture and a subdural hematoma. He spent several days in the ICU and is now in observation at the hospital under general care. While he continues to make strides in regaining his cognitive ability, It is likely Ernesto will require several months of rehabilitative therapy.
Ernesto was visiting at time of the accident and has no family in the area. Upon release from the hospital he will need to be with someone 24 hours a day for at least his first month, and will require on-going care as he acclimates back to his regular life following his traumatic brain injury. Funds donated here will go to Ernesto’s medical bills and living expenses as he recovers.
For those unfamiliar with Ernesto Mendez, he is a Mexico City based documentary filmmaker, film archivist, and photographer. His work includes cinematography for Los Durmientes (2018), an award-winning documentary short highlighting the struggle of migrants moving through the southern border of Mexico. Most recently, Ernesto released Soy Yo Charlie Monttana (2020), a feature length documentary which he produced, directed and edited. The film follows legendary rocker Charlie Monttana in his day to day life over the course of several years. In 2021, Ernesto had two multimedia exhibitions, featuring a mix of field recordings and photography, created during two cherry harvest seasons in northern Oregon.
This fundraiser is organized by a group of friends that want to support Ernesto in his time of healing so he can continue to pursue his passions <3
