St. Vincent Volcano relief

***Working directly with the St. Vincent Rotary Club to facilitate disbursement***

Dear Friends,
As most of you know, the La Soufriere volcano in St. Vincent started erupting on April 9th 2021. There is significant uncertainty with regards to the scale and timing of additional eruptions that are undoubtedly to follow. More than 16,000 people have been forced to leave their homes and there is no timeline for when they can return. The entire island is covered in ash, electricity is going in and out and water is being turned on for only two hour/day so that those fortunate enough to own a water tank can refill. There are thick plumes of volcanic ash moving through the air affecting neighboring islands like Barbados where residents are locked in their homes. In a year of immense uncertainty, the lack of predictability in this situation is nerve wracking. Local friends have described the situation as frightful and even a bit apocalyptic.

As a Trinidadian mother to three young children and living in New York City, tragedies like this make me feel unbearable sadness for Caribbean families with young children that are displaced. Having grown up visiting St. Vincent and the Grenadines many times as a child, I can tell you first hand that the people in these islands are some of the kindest that you will ever meet. For my friends that are not from the Caribbean, I know that each of you has been touched in some way through food, music, friends or maybe even a wonderful vacation. I also know that the past year has been  one of the hardest that any of us has ever had to face and giving for some right now might not be possible.

If you are are able to, any amount (even $5) that you can give will go a long way to helping the people of St. Vincent. I am working directly with the Rotary Club of St. Vincent. Here is a link to their website:
https://rotarygi.org/

The Rotary Club of St. Vincent will use this money to:
1) Purchase supplies from wholesalers
2) Local distribution teams will be taking supplies directly to the volcano victims in the shelters across the island. They are also working off the list of the following items that have been deemed most urgent by  NEMO.  The list will continue to be updated and currently consists of:
Water tanks, buckets, folding cots, portable potties, blankets, field tents, field kitchens, sleeping mats, respirators, goggles, reflective vests, caution tape and hygiene kits.

I created this GoFundMe  to get monetary donations to the victims as fast as possible and to make it easier for the Caribbean diaspora and any other individuals living out of the country to donate with a card. Since the local Rotary club members have been busy in the field dealing with the disaster,  a donation link is still being worked on to be able to donate to the club directly through a credit card. The club has asked for me to send lump sums down to them. As of Monday April 12th, less than 24 hours after the creation of this gofund me, $10,000 USD was wired down directly into the Rotary Club of St. Vincent's account. I will continue to send down lump sums as more money is donated.

Please consider forwarding this fundraiser on to friends and family. We may be separated physically, but together we have the power to touch someone's life in a a very significant way.

Yours truly,
