Loss, Grief, Depression, Medical Crisis, Layoffs - Help Jennifer and Al Hold Onto Hope

Hi everyone,

I’m reaching out on behalf of my dear friends Jennifer and Al Gonzalez, two of the most resilient and generous people I know. Over the past few years, the Gonzalez family has endured a series of heartbreaking losses and overwhelming challenges that would shake anyone to their core. They’ve always been the kind of people who show up for others—now they need us to show up for them.

Their story begins in December 2020, when COVID took both of their parents, Al and Josie, just days apart. Losing both parents so suddenly was devastating. Al had to leave his job and temporarily move to Arizona to manage the estate, while Jennifer traveled back and forth from California for nearly a year. Staying in each state for a couple of weeks before traveling again. During this time, they relied on the kindness of friends and family for places to stay. The emotional toll was immense—Al sank into a deep depression, and Jennifer suffered a nervous breakdown that left her physically and mentally weakened.

In October 2021, they returned to California only to face another blow: they had to leave the rental home they’d lived in for 11 years. After months of searching, they bought a home in April 2022. Al took a minimum-wage job while continuing to battle grief and PTSD from past trauma. Jennifer was doing her best to hold everything together, but Al was becoming more withdrawn.

Just months later, January 2023, Jennifer lost her job. She spent 14 months searching for work, refusing to give up their home. She liquidated their retirement savings and sold anything of value to stay afloat. Friends and family stepped in again to help where they could. In May 2024, Jennifer finally found a new job—but the emotional strain never let up.

6 months later, in December 2024, Al had a complete mental health crisis and was hospitalized in multiple inpatient and residential programs. Jennifer worked tirelessly to navigate California’s broken mental health system, support Al, and manage her demanding new job. The medical debt piled up, and bankruptcy became their only option to save their home.

Al returned home in April 2025 and is slowly recovering, but he’s not yet able to work.

This brings us to today, October 2025—just six months after Al came home and right after filing for bankruptcy—Jennifer was laid off in a massive company-wide reduction. Now, neither of them is working, and they’re about to lose the medical benefits Al desperately needs.

Jennifer is actively seeking employment, but they need help to get through this final stretch. Your support will help cover basic living expenses, medical care, and keep their home while they rebuild. They’re not giving up—and I won’t give up on them either.
