Mom's Cancer Treatment
Donation protected
Family and Friends,
Those of you whom I speak with often know that my family has gone through a multitude of hard times over the years. My mom miraculously survived cervical cancer just 4 years ago. This year, in May, we received the devastating news that she once again has been diagnosed with cancer, this time, breast cancer. The initial shock of this news sent my mom into a short period of depression. However, she has somewhat rebounded with the continued love and care she has received from those surrounding her. I have been travelling back and forth between Las Vegas and Southern California to be with her for emotional support as well as attending doctors appointments to advocate and translate for her in the last few weeks.
We are now faced with more than this overwhelming diagnosis. Currently, we have some very daunting financial bills ahead of us. Based on the cost estimate given to us by the doctor, a mastectomy and post-surgery treatment would be between $30,000-$40,000. My siblings and I have fortunately been able to come up with enough money to cover her initial surgery fees, for now. However, we still need to figure out how to pay for her chemotherapy treatment.
I’ve always heard how an underinsured person can lose their livelihood in one diagnosis, and we are now experiencing this firsthand. My mom is underinsured, and this diagnosis will not only affect her but the rest of her children, four of whom are living under her roof.
Thus far, I have explored many options such as purchasing more health insurance, grants, medical/Medicaid but have had little to no success. At this point, we realize that this expense will be an all out of pocket cost for our family. Though my siblings and I are able to pay the upfront cost of the mastectomy, we still need help with the cost of chemotherapy. I do not make this ask lightly. We do not see any other way than asking for help from our extended family and friends to cover the remaining cost of my mom’s chemotherapy treatment.
We have created a GoFundMe page where you and anyone else you share this with can donate. In addition to helping financially, we ask that you please pray for her and us, and for the doctors that will be doing the surgery and post-treatment. We expect this surgery to take place on August 6th, 2020. This has been yet another very large bump in a long road for my mom over these last few years and, with God’s grace, we pray that she makes it through this trial as well.
Thank you so much for your help. If you feel comfortable, please share this message with your extended network.
With love and humility from all of my mom’s kids,
Ricardo (32), Lucia (31), Jackie (26) , Magda (20), Rosa (17), Daniela (16) and Pancho (12)
