My son Charlie was diagnosed at just 4 years old with Multiple Epiphyseal Dysplasia, a rare genetic condition that affects how bones and cartilage develop. It’s left him with severely deformed hips and spine, one leg longer than the other, and daily, agonising pain. Alongside this, he has developed Secondary Osteoarthritis, causing even more pain throughout his body. He limps with every step and can’t walk more than 10 metres without needing to stop.
Despite this, Charlie has always been determined to live a full and independent life. He’s now 22, has completed an online degree in Engineering, and dreams of building a career and a future for himself. But his condition is worsening, and the pain and fatigue is now so severe that he can’t stand for long, can’t work regular hours, exercise, or enjoy the things a young man in his 20s should.
“Charlie has always worked hard and stayed positive, even when he's in pain. Watching him lose more of his freedom each year has been heartbreaking.” — Charlie’s Mum
He’s worked in retail in the past, but the long hours on his feet were too much. His condition has been socially isolating, causing his mental health to decline. He can’t go out easily, since even short walks with friends would leave him in agony for days.
“He’s the kind of person who doesn’t complain, but I see how much he hides just to get through the day. He deserves so much more than this.” — Charlie’s friend
Charlie has been under NHS care since childhood. He’s had physiotherapy, cortisone injections, and orthotics, but despite years of appointments, there’s been no meaningful progress. He’s now been waiting since 2022 just for a follow-up on his MRI results, despite us chasing them up and trying to push it to happen as soon as possible. Every specialist has said the same thing, that he needs a hip replacement urgently, yet there's been no urgent response.
With NHS delays growing and no surgery date in sight, we’re terrified he’ll lose his entire 20s to pain and immobility.
“Charlie’s worked so hard just to stand still. He deserves the chance to move forward.” — Charlie’s sister
We’re raising funds so Charlie can get private healthcare, and give him the hip surgery he desperately needs. With your help, he could walk without pain, return to work, regain his independence, and finally live the life he’s fought so hard for.
