Urgent Appeal: Help Us Rebuild Our Lives After the Gaza War
My name is Youssef, and I am 20 years old. I was born and raised in Gaza, where my family and I lived a simple, peaceful life in our modest home. Despite the ongoing challenges of the occupation in the Gaza
Strip, we were able to survive and make ends meet. My family was close-knit, and we were content, holding onto hope that things would improve. But that hope was shattered when war came to our doorstep—turning everything we knew into rubble and leaving us with nothing.
The Devastation of War
Pictures of my house after the bombing
The brutal airstrikes and bombing raids on Gaza have left countless families like mine in despair. In the blink of an eye, my entire world was destroyed. Our home, our safety, our livelihood—all gone. We were pulled out from the rubble of the bombing, with nothing left but the clothes on our backs. The bombs didn’t just take our home; they took away our future. With no shelter to protect us from the harsh winter cold or the scorching summer heat, we were left homeless, displaced, and alone.
The war brought not only physical destruction but a wave of suffering. The ongoing famine, lack of clean water, severe health risks from pollution, and scarcity of electricity have made it almost impossible to live a normal life. We are constantly battling the elements, struggling to survive every day. The words I write here cannot fully capture the depths of our suffering—what we endure every single day is beyond imagination. Yet, I am sharing this story with you in the hope that someone, somewhere, will see our pain and extend a hand of help.
The Tragedy of Loss
The war didn’t just take our home; it took our loved ones, too. On the second day of November, 2/11, our neighbor’s house was bombed with a missile that was powerful enough to destroy an entire block and kill over 50 people, including men, women, and children. These innocent lives became martyrs in an instant, their lives extinguished without warning. By the grace of God, my family and I survived, but the toll this tragedy has taken on us is immense.
We lost more than just our home and our neighbors. Over the course of the war, we were forced to flee our home more than six times, running for our lives to escape the missiles and the constant threat of death. In those moments of terror, we lost even more family members. From my father’s side, I lost three cousins and an aunt. From my mother’s side, we lost an aunt, her husband, three daughters, my mother’s cousin, and his son. Our grief has no end.
And then, in another cruel twist of fate, we received the news that the land where we lived—where we had worked so hard to build a life—had been bulldozed. We had a small chicken farm on that land, which my older brother and I worked tirelessly on despite the many challenges of living in Gaza. We had hoped that one day, our farm would provide a steady income, a way to support our family. But now, all of that is gone. The land is now a closed-off military zone, and we cannot even visit it. It feels as though the very ground beneath our feet has been taken away from us, and with it, any chance of rebuilding our lives.

change we can bring.
Together, we can help bring hope to a family whose life has been torn apart by war. Together, we can ensure that our future isn’t defined by tragedy, but by the power of human kindness and solidarity.
