My name is Charlie, and I’m fundraising on behalf of my friend George.

I recently had the privilege to travel to Kenya, where I stayed at a hostel called Nairobi Nomad Backpackers. There, I met George, who both lived and worked there as the hostel manager.

From the moment I arrived, George was one of the kindest, most helpful, and selfless people I’ve met traveling.

He went above and beyond for every guest, including me. But despite his hard work, he often wasn’t paid reliably and struggled to support himself.

Of his modest monthly income — about $110 — about half went directly to support his mother as his dad passed away years ago, leaving them very little to live on.

During my stay, it was the slow season at the hostel, so I invited George to join me on several excursions at my own expense. Together we explored parks around Nairobi, visited local markets, and sat down for meals together. George told me he had never been able to afford to see many of these places, and he was so grateful to finally experience them. He also appreciated being able to give more personal recommendations to future guests after seeing these places firsthand.

Unfortunately, shortly after I left Nairobi, George shared some difficult news. His boss did not pay the rent and the hostel was evicted, leaving him without housing or a job in the blink of an eye.

At the same time, his boss refused to pay him his last month’s wages. With nowhere to stay, he spent nights sleeping outside with his belongings as he worked to find a way to move back home (an 8 hour bus ride with all his belongings).

Through all of this, George has stayed remarkably optimistic, trusting that things will improve and that God will come through for him.

I’m starting this fundraiser to help George and his mother stay on their feet while he searches for stable work.
