Samuel’s Last Wish

On November 19, 2022 at 7:37am, my sweet brother passed away at home, in his sleep. I will never forget the beautiful moment I had with him the night before.

My brother was uncomfortable all day until the nurse showed up and we changed his diaper, we checked his oxygen, we positioned him the way he wanted it, we gave him some medication for pain, cough, and anxiety. She checked his oxygen, heart rate, and blood pressure.

When the nurse left, I made sure my
brother was comfortable. He asked me for Vanilla ensure, with ice and watered down. He drank the whole thing. He never like the Vanilla ensure. I asked him constantly if he was good and he said yes. I gave him some cough medication. My brother was always apologizing and I would always tell him, “Don’t be sorry. This is what family is supposed to do. I love you and I’m always going to be here for you. I’m not leaving your side.”. He would always respond with “Okay ate.”.

He saw me crying on the bed and he reached his hand out to me, I went to hold his hand and I broke down in tears. Seeing my brother in pain, gasping for air, struggling, killed me everyday. He told me, “Ate don’t cry. I’m okay. I’ll be okay.”. I gave him morphine before bed and finished drinking his ensure. We both laid down, we looked at each other, I told him I love him and he said it back, and we called it a night.

I really thought my brother was getting better because when he came home, he was moving his body more. Throughout the night, he would normally be up in pain and asking me for help or whatever he needed. I woke up two-three times and he was just asleep. I woke up at 4-5am, and he was asleep breathing. I started my day off with cleaning and disinfecting my home, took out all the trash, went to check up on him and he was still breathing. I started organizing his medications in the room, turned the lights off and opened the window up for fresh air. Then I went to make a cup of coffee. My dog is normally hyper and at this time, something told me to check up on my brother again. That was when I knew my brother had taken his last breath in peace and at his request, at home.

My brother was diagnosed with stage 4 Kaposi Sarcoma. We fought, I took care of him and I wish I could’ve done more for him. My brother was the sweetest person. He was always chill, always happy, and had such a fun personality. He was never alone! Please help us reach our goal to lay my brother in peace. ❤️
