Regaining My Independence
Donation protected
Hello, my name is Taylor Carpenter and I was born with a genetic bone condition called Osteogenesis Imperfecta (commonly referred to as brittle bone disease). Over the last 29 years of my life, I have broken over 120 bones, my most recent break in my right femur being the worst of my adult life. The reason I say that is because when I break a bone, usually it is healed up within a month or two and I regain my version of full mobility after physical therapy, usually within about 6 months. This time, the break was so severe that for the first time ever, I needed surgery for a broken bone. The surgeon put a plate on the outside of my femur and then drilled 11 screws into my bone. Unfortunately, due to this new hardware, my right leg is unable to function in the same way that it used to and as a result, I am no longer able to drive with pedal extensions. It has been about 9 months since my accident and I am desperately needing to regain my independence. I am trying to acquire the funding I need so that I can purchase hand controls, which are quite costly. Additionally, in order to use those hand controls, the DMV requires that I get a certification, which costs over 500 dollars. I deeply appreciate any assistance you can give and thank you for taking the time to help me.
