My mom

My mom is a retired nurse, grandparent, and a loving mother. She now works as an Uber driver in the early years of her retirement to help make ends meet. In the early hours of August 7th, she picked up a fare, it was business as usual. Upon picking up said fare, her morning took a turn for the worse. She picked up three young men and they quite literally took her for everything she is worth. They physically assaulted her, pulling her out of the drivers’ side of her car. Upon pulling her from her car they informed her that they had a gun and would use it on her if she did not give them the passcode for her phone. Naturally she complied and they took off with her car, phone, purse, vehicle, and her keys. She walked to the nearest place of business and called the police. After the police got her home, obviously still very bothered by what had happened that morning, she called me. She filled me in on everything that had happened and let me know that she was home safe but didn’t know what she was going to do.

The following morning, I got her a temporary phone with temporary service so she could contact her insurance company and be in contact with the police. The police were able to locate her car, impound it, and from what I understand arrest two of the three young men who did this to her. While the police did find her vehicle and two of the people who did this, she still does not have her phone, purse or the keys to her vehicle. Once the police search her vehicle and no longer have use for it she will be responsible for paying to have the vehicle towed as well as getting new keys made for it. While the police have done their diligence and put their best foot forward, this whole situation is still leaving my mom in a tremendous amount of financial turmoil.

Initially she was under the impression that her personal insurance through State Farm would cover what had happened. This, however, is not the case. Given that she was driving for Uber when all of this happened, she was informed that Uber and their insurance company was liable for what had happened. When my mom learned this, she got in touch with Uber who deferred her to progressive. They informed her that their deductible is $2,000. Meaning my mom must pay $2,000 out of pocket for a new phone, getting her vehicle towed, paying a locksmith or dealership to replace her keys and anything else that arises from this crime. As a person living from paycheck to paycheck this has caused a lot of stress and anxiety for my mom.

My mom is trying her best to make her way in retirement, which has proven to be quite difficult. If you have a couple dollars you could throw her way, it would be greatly appreciated. Normally we would not go this route, but this situation has served as a curve ball to say the least. Her car is still impounded, and we are currently waiting to hear back from the police for more information.

Thank you for your consideration.
