Help Rebuild Coral Reefs!

Hi there! My name is Hannah Moore and I'm a marine biologist. The short story about me: from Utah, now live in Germany, love fish, and come October, I will travel to Cambodia for my research on fish and artificial coral reefs.

Everyone has probably heard at one point or another that the coral reefs are in danger, but don't know exactly what that means. Due to ocean warming, sea level rise, and unsustainable fishing (such as fisherman throwing homemade bombs onto the reef!) coral reefs around the world are in trouble. So what am I going to do? I will plant artificial reef structures around damaged coral reefs, and see what fish use and begin to live on these structures. Natural coral reefs take thousands of years to grow, so we need to help them out a bit. If we begin to lose our coral reefs, not only will thousands of plants and animals (ones that YOU eat too) disappear, but what makes our planet special will begin to disappear too.

Why does this matter you may ask? Well 40% of the worlds population lives within 100 km's of the coast, and many of those people depend on the ocean for their livlihood. Not only does the ocean provide people with economic benefits (and tasty fish and crabs, yum!), it is what makes earth "earth" by regulating temperatures, sequestering carbon (you all those nasty green house gases, CO2, etc? The ocean can absorb those gases!) The oceans are big, but even they can only withstand so much change before they cease to function in the way we know. AKA the air we breathe, the food we eat, and many products we enjoy have a connection to the worlds oceans. This research is aimed and understanding ways to lessen our negative impact on the oceans.

Any donation will greatly help not only my research, but hopefully the health (in a tiny way) of our oceans as well. Your donations will go towards building the artificial reef structures, Go Pro cameras for filming these structures, a solar charging for said cameras (there's no power on my little island), and dive equipment.

Every amount helps, thank you from me and from the oceans,
Hannah
