I had no idea how to start this, so I'm just going to be completely honest. My mom and I hate asking for money or help, but we're basically at the end of our rope here. A couple friends mentioned that GoFundMe could be a good thing to do...and really this is our last hope.
My dad died on December 14, and since then my mom has been bombarded with tons of financial problems at an already awful time. She recently lost one of her part time jobs, and the money she makes at her current job is not nearly enough to get by. She relied heavily on the money my dad was receiving from social security to pay the mortgage and bills. My mom thought she'd be able to continue getting his social security benefits, but we recently found out she has to be at least 60 years old for that to happen and unfortunately she's only 55. We're pretty worried how things are going to work until then.
The most immediate threat is my mom's mortgage payment of $1,383.82 due on January 1. We were already in danger of losing the house a couple years ago, so she really doesn't want to miss any mortgage payments. However, neither of us have any money to pay that right now. My mom makes about $400-$500 a month at her part time job depending on the hours she's able to get, which is nowhere near enough.
I would gladly help if I had the money, but I've been unemployed for 8 months and have been struggling to even pay my own rent. Thankfully I managed to get a job but it doesn't start until January 4, so I won't be at all able to help her out financially until mid January, which will be too late for the mortgage. On top of that, cremation costs came out to about $3,000, and we just found out that the 911 call alone cost $1,826.90. This doesn't include monthly bills or the cost of my dad's hospital stay. Even with my new job, my mom makes so little that supporting her and myself will be tough, and we're already both swimming in debt. There's not much room for more.
My dad passed away with no life insurance, no prior plan, and no money left behind. We really have no means to pay all of his death costs, and no idea how to get out of this financial black hole. I understand that times are tough and this happened so close to the holidays...any help will be appreciated, even if it's just $1. If you have any advice on how to handle a situation like this, especially for my mom, please let me know. We're very much at a loss on what to do. Thanks.
