In the midst of the biggest anti-authoritarian protests in Hong Kong’s history, there was a burglary at the office of Socialist Action (CWI in Hong Kong) on 17 October.
Six computers, mobile phones, three credit cards and personal artifacts belonging to staff members were stolen. This is the worst possible time for such a misfortune – when the mass struggle is entering a critical phase.
There is an urgent need to collect 70,000 HKD (around 8,900 USD) to replace lost equipment and funds. Socialist Action is known for many campaigns in support of democratic rights, against racism and sexism, opposing the neo-liberal policies of Hong Kong’s pro-billionaire government. It is the only Hong Kong political organization that actively organizes on both sides of the border to build solidarity with workers’ struggles in China.
From day one of the mass struggle against the extradition law and police violence, Socialist Action has been an active force campaigning for the mass movement to put workers’ organization in the foreground, opposing US and Chinese imperialism, and seeking to consciously spread the mass movement to mainland China.
Hong Kong is at the mercy of a crazed rampage of police violence and repression, with daily tear gas attacks, savage police beatings and over 2,500 arrests made since June. A de facto state of emergency has been imposed by the non-elected government, declaring protesters to be “rioters” and “terrorists”. Since August most demonstrations have been banned and are viciously attacked.
Without replacing the six computers stolen in the break-in, Socialist Action is not in a position to continue to produce the four editions of its bi-monthly magazine (Hong Kong, Mainland China, Taiwan and English edition). Other vital activity is at risk.
We are appealing for donations – every sum, small or large, will be a great help in enabling Socialist Action to quickly get back up to full speed.
I am Mike Forster and I'm an activist with Socialist Alternative in England, Wales and Scotland, which is the sister organisation of Social Action in Hong Kong (CWI). Socialist Action approached me for help after this despicable burglary. They need the money to but computers and other equipment as explained above. The money will be transferred from my organisation's account to help them as soon as the target is achieved. Thanks for your donation!
