Red-cockaded Woodpecker relief

Tax deductible
This year our team will be participating for the 7th year in a row together in the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Youth Birding Competition (YBC). This will be the 14th year in a row that it has been held. YBC teams can compete anywhere in the state of Georgia, beginning at 5:00 PM on April 25th and finish at 5:00 Pm on the 26th at Charlie Elliot Wildlife Center in central Georgia. Most seriously competitive teams start down on a beach at the Georgia coast. For the last 3 years The Wood Thrushes have started at Gould’s Inlet on St. Simons Island and go on to dozens of different places from there.

This year our team has decided to do a fund raiser. We would like to collect as much money as possible to help biologists and managers restore Red-Cockaded Woodpecker and Bachman’s Sparrow habitat that was lost or seriously damaged in hurricane Michael. We plan to donate all money raised to The Environmental Resources Network (T.E.R.N) and specify the money to be used for this important work.

The Bachman’s Sparrow is a small sparrow in the Southeastern United states that inhabits mainly longleaf savannah and other open grasslands. It is endemic to the southeastern US and is classified “near-threatened” by IUCN. Meaning that without serious management, it could become extinct. The Red-Cockaded Woodpecker is a small Southeastern woodpecker that is also restricted to the southeastern United states. It inhabits mature Longleaf pine forests. Today there is an estimated 12,500 left in the world, about 1% of its original population. It also, is classified as federally endangered.

Please, for the birds sake, help us raise as much money as possible before April 27Th.

You can make a straight donation, or you can pledge a certain amount per species we find. Last year we located 161 species in Georgia. Our goal for this year is 165 species. If we find that many, a pledge of $0.25 per bird, would be a $40.25 contribution.

Thank you!
