Over the last 20 years, our sister has dedicated her life to the care of others. As a pediatric nurse, she has shown an incredible sense of compassion and dedication to helping her patients get better. Unfortunately, now it’s Kara and her family that are in need of help.
In July the entire family was diagnosed with Chronic Lyme Disease. A terrible condition that affects cognitive functions and makes the infected feel very lethargic and weak. The disease can wreak havoc on the body and many functions including eyesight, hearing, motor control and loss of function of arms and legs. It is causing paralysis in 4 of their family members from minutes to hours at a time with no warning when they may fall down or not be able to have control of their bodies. An entire family with this terrible disease is incredibly rare and devastating. Through the last few months they have learned that it was passed from Kara to her 3 children at birth.
Unfortunately, this disease has forced a series of financial and personal hardships to the Donley family. Her husband Chuck had to close his business when the symptoms became too severe to continue as an electrician. Their daughter Grace, has not been able to attend school for the last year. Their other children Abby and Carter try to attend as much school as possible but continue to miss days as symptoms become too severe. In April, Kara began showing serious symptoms of Lyme Disease that has forced her out of her profession.
The financial strain Lyme disease has put on the family has been substantial. Without income from Chuck or Kara, the family was forced to move in with our parents. On October 7th, Kara’s short term disability pay will run out and medical bills are continuing to mount.
The family continues to fight and recently started to show improving conditions as specialists continue to modify medications. These antibiotics will likely take up to a year to make a meaningful impact in the family’s condition. In the meantime the money raised during this campaign will help Kara and her family pay for growing medical expenses and personal living expenses.
