My mothers name is Brenda Gamboe. She is a Registered Nurse that has compassionately taken care of so many individuals in our community for years. Others may know her as a long time harness horse racing groom from the Quad City Downs, or from bartending for years at Bud's Skyline Inn.
Some may not know this, but unfortunately she has been fighting stage 3b colon cancer since February. She went for her routine 50th birthday colonoscopy(6 months later), which revealed a fully obstructive malignant mass. Weeks later she had 12 inches of her colon removed in a surgery after being rushed to Iowa City by ambulance for a full bowel obstruction. The cancerous mass had taken up the full circumference of her colon prior to being removed. She was forced to quit her job. Eventually we found out that it had spread to her lymph system, 1 of 29 lymphnodes tested showed up diseased. Therefore 2 days ago she had surgery to have a port implanted in her chest and started chemotherapy immediately 3 hours after. Her regimen is a 3 hour infusion at the hospital, then they hook her up to a chemotherapy fanny-pack infusion pump and send her home for 48 hours to continue treatment, after which she is unhooked. She will do this every 2 weeks for 6 months to begin with.
The crazy part is 2 years ago we were doing this exact same thing, except I was the one going through the fight. After being diagnosed on my 19th birthday with Hodgkins Lymphoma, I went through numerous chemotherapy treatments, trips to houston to see specialists, then to Iowa city for a stem cell transplant and radiation. My mom stayed right next to me through the the whole thing and never let me give up. She raised money for me through benefits, yard sales, and fundraisers. A large majority of my bills were paid thanks to her efforts. So now the role has switched. I need to rally all of my fellow friends and family members to share this and cash in change jars or do whatever you possibly can to help her out. A $55,000 and $33,000 hospital bill have already came in the mail. Every penny helps. Thanks for your help and please keep her in your prayers, God Bless.
