Two years ago, Stephanie Bairrington Couls's life changed forever. Her daughter Courtney was murdered, and her husband David was almost killed and is now permanently handicapped.

David spent almost 2 weeks in intensive care followed by a month in a skilled nursing facility, and has had 2 major surgeries, countless tests, physical therapy, and too many doctor's appointments to count. All of this has drained their savings, maxed out credit cards, and eaten into monthly expenses. Stephanie was, of course, right by her husband's side through the entire ordeal.

Because of this horrifically traumatic situation, both Stephanie and David have been diagnosed with PTSD, severe anxiety, and depression. Therapy for their mental health has been a necessary expense but has further strained their finances.

In spite of all of this, Stephanie managed to continue working full-time to support David and herself -- until she was diagnosed with endometrial cancer. In addition to the physical illness, this was a tremendous shock emotionally. Stephanie has already had multiple doctor's appointments, tests, and one surgery. Now she's facing another major surgery, recovery from that, and future treatments. She's receiving short-term disability benefits through her employer because she can't work right now, but she's receiving only 60% of her regular pay. Needless to say, this is financially devasting and they can't make ends meet, let alone pay for additional medical expenses.
