It is with a heavy heart that we share the news of the passing of our dear colleague and Plant Based Treaty campaigner, Julius Kitone. Julius was tragically killed in a motor vehicle accident on February 13, 2026, on the Kampala–Mbarara Highway in Uganda.
Julius was a trailblazing journalist for NBS TV and the Executive Director of Africa Climate Resilience. He was also a fearless advocate for food security and a just plant-based food system. Julius didn’t just talk about change; he lived it. As a journalist and activist, his work for the Plant Based Treaty was transformative.
Julius was instrumental in developing the Plant Based Treaty in Uganda along with his team members and represented the movement with profound clarity at COP30 in Belém in Brazil. He didn’t view the treaty as a mere policy paper; he saw it as a lifeline for the Global South. Julius said, "The Plant Based Treaty is not just a document, it is a movement. A movement that says: we can no longer afford to cross planetary boundaries. We must act now."
Our deepest condolences go out to his beloved wife and fellow Plant Based Treaty activist Cathy and two young sons, aged two and five, parents, family, friends, and the entire climate community in Uganda and worldwide. If you can please donate to this fundraiser which will help cover the costs of his funeral and provide support for his family.
