JoAnn has been on quite a journey! When she was only 16, she found a lump on her neck and was diagnosed with Hodgkin's cancer. In 1975, as a young high schooler, she underwent chemo and radiation. Back then, cancer care was not as advanced as it is currently. She was told that complications might arise down the road from these treatments. Unfortunately, that is what happened.
In 2018, shortly after her birthday in January, cancer was found in her lungs, resulting in her losing one-third of one lung. Then, in December of the same year, she received a breast cancer diagnosis which resulted in a double mastectomy. This past May, the lung cancer metastasized to the abdomen wall and her colon. Her chemo medication, Tagrisso, is an expensive pill she will take daily for the rest of her life. She received a grant to pay for the pills for the first three months, but the cost could continue to add up after that.
Within the past few months, the doctors have inserted a drainage tube to alleviate the fluid build-up in her lungs. Carl has reached nurse status and is super helpful at helping Jo drain this every few days. Due to her lack of appetite and the pain of eating regular foods, JoAnn has lost considerable weight. She is currently down to 79lbs. Last week, her doctors suggested a feeding tube to help her gain weight. Her stomach is still adjusting to this tube, and she will need more time and prayers to make progress and gain weight.
Additionally, she hasn’t been able to lie down in bed. Jo and Carl purchased a new bed so she could be upright, hoping to sleep more comfortably. This bed was costly and has increased the growing financial total.
In summary, JoAnn’s body has taken a beating and these events have also come with a substantial financial burden. She is a tough cookie and will continue to fight until she feels well again. She has been a committed and loyal volunteer at the Ronald McDonald House in Denver for nine years. It is her turn to be on the receiving end of help.
Would you consider donating to JoAnn to lighten the financial burden for the Best family? She and her family would be grateful for your generosity. If you are unable to give financially, please continue to keep her in your prayers.
