I have an incredible opportunity, but I'll need your help to take advantage of it. After 24 years together, Jerame and I are separating with lots of love but very little money. That's making things incredibly difficult, but I want to turn this into a positive.

After 31 years of fighting for queer rights - yours and mine - I must focus on my future. I know that times are tough for everyone right now, but if I've supported you in the past, I'm asking you to return the favor now when I need it most. It's time for me to follow the sun and chase my own dreams with the help of friends and colleagues.

Over the years, I have:

Launched the internet's first gay boycott campaign - notching the community's first online win
Founded one of the first LGBTQ blogs, bringing daily news and commentary to queer people nationwide for the first time
Led initiatives that protect millions of people from LGBTQ discrimination
Ensured someone unjustly imprisoned was released
Started the boycott of the Salvation Army, leading the church to become one of the most LGBTQ-friendly denominations in the country
Brought large corporations to their knees and held powerful politicians to task, resulting in changed laws and policies along with sizable corporate donations and employee protections
Raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for LGBTQ organizations, large and small - and then held them accountable

For 16 years, I have reported almost daily on the queer community and slogged through a lot of muck. I've received death threats and daily hate mail for years. Right now, I need to take a break. I have stepped back from work temporarily to move and get things together.

While it's an incredible honor to be included in national and state museums, that doesn't pay the bills. Leading a pride parade won't put a roof over my head. I could use your support instead of facing this alone.

I plan to take some time to work on my book while I begin the newest chapter in my life. If you can give $100 or more, I'll include you in the book's dedication.
