Dr. Mitchell M. Tseng Memorial Scholarship Fund

Donation protected
In honor of the rich life led by our father and husband, Professor Mitchell M. Tseng, we would like to set up a scholarship to keep the memory of his ideas and life alive, and to maintain our family’s relationship with Feng Chia University and Taiwan, where he spent the last years of his life in fulfillment and happiness.

We view his work at Feng Chia as the culmination of the decades of experience he acquired in industry and Academia.  He loved being able to leverage the network of his connections to provide opportunity for students in Taiwan, his home country.  Through his last days, he had one goal in mind: to improve the lives and broaden the horizons of as many students as possible. Despite the grief that his passing has caused, our family can be consoled by the idea that he will continue to change lives by providing financial support to students who do not have the means necessary to achieve their potential.

Professor Mitchell M Tseng was the University Chair Professor and Dean at International School of Technology and Management, Feng Chia University, Taiwan. He was also Chair Professor Emeritus at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.  He started his career developing key enabling manufacturing technologies for the computer industry, some of which, including the diamond machining for polygons in laser printers, are still widely used today. He worked closely with industry to collaborate on more than 100 projects to upgrade product design and manufacturing capabilities in companies. Before returning to academia, he worked in Xerox and Digital Equipment Corporation for two decades developing products, service systems and managing business transformation. He has been working on Industry – University – Government collaboration from various perspectives in different countries. The outcomes include advanced Internet of Things semiconductor chips, Artificial Intelligence systems, robotic assembly systems and others.

He is an elected Fellow of the International Academy of Production Research (CIRP), American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and Hong Kong Academy of Engineering Sciences (HKAES). He was the recipient of LEAD Award from SME, Franz Edelman Laureate (INFORMS), and Outstanding Industrial Engineer (Purdue). He also held faculty appointments in the MIT Media Lab, MIT Zaragoza Logistics Center, Nanshan Professor in School of Design, China Academy of Arts and Honorary Adjunct Professor of Business and Management in Technical University of Munich.

Just prior to his passing, he was recognized as a Yushan Scholar by the government of Taiwan.

Mitchell passed away on Monday, October 21 in Taichung, Taiwan. He had been living with lung cancer for over 4 years, and unfortunately spent the last 2 months fighting an infection in his already weakened lungs. Until his last hospitalization, he consistently amazed those around him with the energy and passion he applied to his work in spite of his health problems. He continued to grow the innovative programs he founded at Feng Chia University, travel the world, and connect with his global family and friends until the very end.

The proceeds from this endowed scholarship fund will be granted on an annual basis to an applicant of Feng Chia's ISTM program with a demonstrated financial need.  Thank you so much for your support of this endeavor, and for your friendship during our father's vibrant life.

With Gratitude,

Sophia, Angie, and Jennifer Tseng
