My name is Musu Taylor, and I am a current Temple University student, with a major in Legal Studies and a minor is Africology and African American Studies. This past semester I had the privilege of working as an Intern at The Education Law Center while enrolled in a course called The Socialization and Development of the Black Child. Both of these experiences opened my eyes to the lack of agency and safe spaces provided to Black children in underserved communities. In turn, I have decided to take action. 

With the help of my good friend, and roommate, Zaréya Lewis, a recent Psychology and Criminal Justice graduate of Temple University and inner city child advocate, we have decided to start The Kitabu Club. The Kitabu Club will be a book club for Black children in North Philadelphia and the surrounding areas. The mission of The Kitabu Club is to inspire, support, and provide agency for young underserved Black youth. Our goal is to provide these children with books that are centered around Black children, educate them on the historical events each books conveys, and contextualize each book in the children's own lives.

Zaréya and I plan to hold weekly sessions over the course of 10 weeks starting in June, providing each child with their own copy of each book we read throughout the summer. We hope that each child that joins Kitabu leaves us at the end of the summer with a better understanding of the world that they live in than they had before joining The Kitabu Club. 

Our goal is to raise $3000 for The Kitabu Club. This money will go directly to buying books, journals, bags, and paying for the space that we will need to run this club. We ask that you give whatever you can to support our efforts.
