On behalf of my daughter Brittany Holmes and myself, I humbly seek monetary donations from you to fund medical and financial expenses. Brittany is a 33-year-old young woman who has been dealing with SLE Lupus for over the past six years. In 2018, Brittany’s kidneys failed and now she is on dialysis eight hours a day. Regrettably, we recently received the news this year that Brittany was diagnosed with congestive heart failure. My child’s heart is deteriorating. Instead of praying for one organ, Brittany now needs a heart and a kidney transplant. Each day, Brittany fights for her life. She is strong, but as a mother, I can see the wear and tear on her spirit and body.
Brittany is required to stay in the hospital away from her hometown until she receives both transplants. This can be six months or longer. I continue to be by Brittany’s side each day for appointments and treatments, but the out of pocket (medically related and non-medically related) expenses have depleted my savings. The cost for a hotel room or apartment is extremely expensive and unaffordable. I have exhausted available loan options (from family, friends and my bank) just to ensure Brittany gets the medical care she needs.
Once Brittany is released from the hospital, she will need to stay in Gainesville for a month for follow-up appointments. The city is too far for me to commute every day from our hometown. Brittany’s medicine for the first year with insurance is very expensive. The medicine is critical for the transplants to be successful and for Brittany to live. Medical expenses that are not covered by Brittany’s insurance will need to be paid as she recovers at home with me. I may have to take a leave of absence without pay due to the unforeseen future of Brittany’s recovery period at home.
Brittany is a very cheerful and giving person. She enjoys helping others in any way she can. She enjoys working, school and spending time with her family and friends. Brittany had to stop attending school because of her illness, which she really wants to finish and get her degree in Accounting. She is an incredibly determined young woman who pushes herself to overcome every obstacle that comes her way. The doctors call my child a “miracle” because they witnessed her overcome death twice.
As a parent, I have always protected my child. This illness is attacking her body and there is nothing I can do to stop it. It is painful for me to request money from strangers, but even more painful to watch my child’s battle. Brittany and I are praying for a generous outpouring of donations to help us cover these extraordinary costs.
