Jana has taught herself to take care of the donkeys' feet, but they need dental treatment too. The thirteen gorgeous cats Jana also takes care of are in need of medicines, and some are due for sterilisation -- so the population does not get completely out of control! Feeding thirteen cats can cost as much as 300-400 euros every two months, while Lucy, a beautiful blind cat, suffers from a rare auto-immune illness, and Polly, another of the cats, recently had to have six teeth out. Zena, the horse, completes the family, proudly guarding all the donkeys and eating everything in sight.
Jana has provided a wonderful home for these animals now for many years. Your donations will help ensure she can continue to do so -- as well as go towards transforming the farm she lives in into a place that can once again reopen for holidayers.
Pano was just a few days old when Jana first met him. When she learned three months later he was going to be sent to slaughter for meat, there was no other possible course of action but to take Pano home. She found him a friend, Lily Rose, so he wouldn’t be lonely, and then Lula, Pano’s half sister, joined them too. They were all nervous and in a poor condition when they first came to live with Jana. But she took such good care of them, they became obedient and patient (though sometimes naughty) life-long friends, each with distinctive characters of their own. Jana made it her quest to give better treatment and respect to these amazing animals without which most of the Hvar island’s infrastructure would never have been built. There would have been no vineyards, no olive groves without these animals. Nowadays, there are still some working donkeys on the island. But most are left neglected, tethered to trees and then slaughtered for meat.
Please dig deep to see them through this winter. Your donations will go directly towards restoring the donkey house, mending the fences of the donkey field, and all the food, medicines and dental treatments the animals need.
In addition, any extra donations you could give would go towards restoring the overall farm, enabling much-needed renovations of the interior that would allow Jana to reopen her doors for guests to stay there later next year. So many have benefited from Jana's yoga holidays (awarded five stars on trip advisor). We've been energised and rejuvenated by them. Since she began taking care of the donkeys, many have joined her on the daily donkey walks too. The walks through the woods at a slow and steady no-rush pace became a therapeutic experience for these guests – a quiet way to get back to nature and leave city cares behind. Jana's holidays will combine her inspiring yoga practice with the pleasures of walking and talking with the donkeys and cats. Your donations can be a downpayment towards future retreats with her. In the meantime while the restoration work is going on, on agreement with Jana, yoga sessions via zoom can also be arranged.
It's time to make sure these animals are safe and well, and help make sure that one day we may visit Jana once again. Then you too can meet Pano, Lily Rose, Lula, Paca, Romeo, Juliet and baby Mathilda.
