Good Things To Eat Sacramento:
Good Things To Eat is a Social Business Enterprise located in Sacramento, CA's Curtis Park neighborhood. We are dedicated to offering delicious, wholesome food for all, and economic opportunities for formerly incarcerated citizens returning to our community.
We have a great retail space in an excellent location and have completed our major equipment purchases and improvements. We need funds to help us complete our final permitting, finishing touches (e.g., converting all lighting to LED), and small equipment purchases (cookware, dish racks, etc.) so that we can open our doors and begin providing freshly prepared, locally sourced meals and critically needed jobs.
Why We Came to Be:
We are as passionate about social justice as we are about good food. We believe that sustainable businesses must include employees and the needs of the surrounding community in their vision of sustainability. We believe that individuals who have completed their incarceration should have a chance to return to productive life in the community. Our community has far too few opportunities for formerly incarcerated people and a rapidly expanding homeless population.
*The unemployment rate among the formerly incarcerated is 27% (Couloute & Kopf, 2018).
*Employment is the single most important factor in preventing recidivism (Berg & Huebner, 2011).
*50-80% of formerly incarcerated people are at risk of experiencing homelessness when they are released from prison. That risk is likely greater in Sacramento which is experiencing rapidly rising rents due to an extreme housing shortage and historically low rental vacancy rates around 1%.
How You Can Help:
If you care about social justice, sustainability, homelessness, criminal justice reform, economic equity and opportunity--or if you just love fresh, wonderful food made with an abundance of love--please give what you can to help us unlock the door to opportunity so that we can bring you Good Things To Eat.
Your gift will help us:
-purchase some smaller cookware items (pots, sheet pans, dish racks, etc.)
-complete energy conservation improvements and conversion of lighting to LED
-complete exterior painting
-build a fence to further secure the rear of the property and help create an outdoor seating area (we have already added a security system and additional security lighting)
-pay our final city and county permitting costs.
Thank You!
We need your help today in order to have the shop open by March 31st. We are 100% locally owned and operated and proudly woman and minority owned. Your generosity helps keep us independent and allows us to stay focused on our mission. Your support to help us open our doors and begin serving the community is deeply appreciated. For those of you in Sacramento (or visiting), we can't wait to see you in person at the shop and share with you some truly Good Things To Eat!
