Hi my name is Jody and I'm asking for help. I don't normally do this but I feel I don't have any other choice. About 1 year ago I adopted a 5 yr old hedgehog named Bibblewho had been neglected. She had never been handled, never had her nails clipped, she lived in a dirty cage all the time and they never interacted with her. I began working with her and bonding with her. I noticed she has the sweetest little personality even through all the years she wasnt loved. This little girl lays on my chest and cuddles me every night, she gives me kisses and always wants me holding her. On May 15th I noticed that she was peeing blood. I called around to the vets in my area but most of them didnt deal with exotics so I had to take her to Kingston which is 1.5 hrs away from me. This vet is supposedly a specialist who deals with hedgehogs all the time. I took her to the vet they said she had a UTI. On May 21 2022 we had a tornado rip through our town and surrounding areas leaving us with no power. I noticed the antibiotics weren't working and she was still peeing blood so I contacted the vet again and brought her back on May 22 2022. He did a urine culture and found no stones, no crystals, no masses or lumps so he still insisted she has a UTI and put her on more antibiotics. Later that week I went to give her meds and realized the bottle was empty. I know none was spilled or wasted as I'm the only one who touched this bottle (I'm thinking when the dr mixed the meds he accidentally gave me the wrong bottle). So I called her vet again. He said he doesn't know how that happened but if I wanted I could drive back to the vet and get more. With the price of gas lately and my job this wasn't possible so she missed the last 4 doses of her meds. On May 30th 2022 I was holding Bibble and notices her lady parts were very swollen so I called the vet back again. He asked me to send him pictures through email so I did. I didn't hear back from him until June 1 2022. He sent me an email saying he was very sorry for what is happening to Bibble and he isn't sure how I ended up nit getting enough meds because I actually should have had extra. He said that he is getting very concerned because the 2nd antibiotics should have worked within the first 2-3 days so missing 4 doses wouldn't have made a difference. He said I could bring her back for more tests. He wanted to do an ultrasound that would cost $110+tax and an xray that costs $730+tax to check for Pyometra which is a uterine infection. If this is indeed pyometra she would have to be spayed. He then proceeded to tell me that he has never preformed surgery on a hedgehog but he would "attempt " to do the surgery on her and the price of the surgery is $2000+tax. I am now becoming upset. This dr is suppose to be a specialist. And he wants to charge me an insane amount to "attempt" a surgery hes never done?! I called around and found another vet closer to me but their prices are a little bit more expensive. I explained my situation and they told me to bring her in. I drove Bibble there last night (June 2 2022) and they didnt charge me for the visit but did say the prices for the tests and surgeries were about the same but i did find an actual hedgehog specialist who has performed the surgery on a hedgehog. I am at a loss on what to do. I don't have the funds to get her the help she needs but I can't in good faith put her to sleep without knowing what's wrong with her. So I've swallowed my pride and I'm finally asking for help with her vet bills. These funds are only for the tests NOT the surgery. To most she's just a rodent but to me she's family and I can't just give up on her. Thid little girl has completely stolen my heart and after everything she has gone through i feel I owe it to her to at least figure out whats wrong. Please if you can help in any way it would be greatly appreciated.
