911 Therapy Dog Athena Needs Help

Donation protected
Working for 911 can be a very stressful career. Long hours, days and nights, always being on your toes ready for the next emergency. Dispatch Centers around the world are continually looking for ideas to help relieve stress and make the workplace a comfortable place to be. Our dispatch center found the most amazing way to relieve stress and that is with the help of our beloved Therapy dog Athena.

Athena is a 2.5-year-old German Shepheard. Usually bred for getting the bad guy, Athena had other plans with her police career. Instead of attacking people with her teeth, Athena chooses to attack with her kisses. She just wants to give all her love and receive it all day long. Because of this, our retired Department K9 Commander knew just the place she would fit in and brought her to us from Colorado.

Not only has Athena been the most precious gift we have ever received here at Dispatch, she has been a gift to the officers in the field as well. When they need a moment to destress, they will drop by for a visit, bring treats, and play ball with Athena. Don’t tell them I told you, but I have often caught them laying on the floor with her and giving her lots of love.

We recently had a horrible scare with her health and risked losing her. You see, she is so loved and so spoiled, people always want to give her treats. As hard as we try to tell everyone not to feed her people food, they just can’t resist her sweet eyes begging for something yummy. Well, our faithful custodian gave her some raisins to eat which if you don’t know are very toxic for dogs. Grapes and or raisins can cause kidney failure and death rather quickly. She was rushed to the vet and had to spend 3 days away from us here at the 911 center. We missed her terribly, but we are so grateful she has recovered.

Because Athena was a gift to our center, we are responsible for all costs associated with caring for her every day including vet bills. Unfortunately, this vet visit set us back almost $3,000 which is way above the reserves we have for her. We do not want to risk losing her due to an inability to provide for her. She is the most precious gift we have ever received, and we love her so much. We also need her. She has an amazing ability of always making us feel better when we need it.

Please consider helping us with the vet bill we incurred so that we may continue benefiting from the therapy she gives us whenever we need it, right here in our beautiful center. Your kindness is deeply appreciated by all of us here at 911, and by the Deputies who stop by to see her. Thank you from all of us!
