90 YEAR OLD NEIGHBOR NEEDS URGENT HELP
Here is a link to her story from Univision from last week:
2/2/24 - I went over to Gladys's new place yesterday for a call with SSI. Unfortunately, since she never worked here in the States and is not a US Citizen, she is ineligible. We then called 211 and the representative, as sad as she was to say, communicated that the funds for her area have been exhausted. She could not tell me how long until they would have more, but said to check in quarterly. We tried the APS number given to us by the 211 rep, but the line was busy for 30 straight minutes. I am looking online this morning to see if we can have someone from APS call us. Thank you to all of you. I refuse to believe that we as a species are inherently bad and everyone here is proving that. Although I have seen some of the bad through this process, the good is definitely outweighing the bad.
1/31/24 - Apologies on the delay in updating. I have been inundated with work and attempting to help Gladys all at the same time. So we have great news, followed by some bad news unfortunately. We have found a place for Gladys and with my parents help moved her in yesterday. Her new rent is $600/month. That is the good news. As previously mentioned, she had assistance paying $450 a month in her previous location. That help was supposed to continue and we were planning on using the money raised to supplement the remaining $150/month. As it turns out, the lady's (benefactor who was paying the $450 a month) daughter discovered we were raising funds for her, she decided to call and yell at Gladys that she was withholding this information which is certainly not true and decided she was going to tell her father, the benefactor's husband, to convince her to cut Gladys off since she now had funds. But if you do the math, the money raised will only cover the next 5-6 months of rent. So Gladys is not again worried about her long term prospects as it has come to pass that the benefactor is no longer going to hold up her end of the bargain at no fault of her own. She was chastised by her husband and daughter if she continued to contribute. So now the monies raised have become that much more important for Gladys and her stress level has once again piqued due to the long term ramifications of the limited funds. I asked her not to worry as my wife Beatriz and I, along with my parents will do everything in our power to help her. We have a phone interview with SSI to hopefully get her some financial benefits to assist with this issue. I am also in touch with Section 8 about her situation and am calling Adult Protective Services tomorrow to see what they can do for her. So the plight continues. Thank you to everyone for your continued support!
Hello:
My wife Beatriz and I are attempting to help out an elderly neighbor in need of assistance. Following the advice of someone from the Nextdoor app, we are setting this up to give her some financial cushion to assist in her move. Please read the following post from Nextdoor for the background. We sincerely appreciate any help for her whatsoever, whether financial or any recommendations/housing availability for her. She is self sufficient in that she still cooks, cleans and watches after herself and is on a tight, tight budget. See story below:
When I arrived home earlier this afternoon (this was 2 days ago), I was flagged down by an elderly woman who was frantically looking for help in the cold, wet conditions....
Long story shortened - The lady who she lives with is attempting to kick her out of the house. She is paying (along with another couple of people) for a room by the month ($450 to be precise). She has no family (her niece who escorted her here from Cuba passed away in December) and her benefactor who gives her cash to pay the rent does not have a room available for her.
Does anyone know or have a room that this beautiful, lovely & grief-stricken woman can rent temporarily until she finds a more permanent abode? She is self sufficient (she cooks, cleans & looks after herself without the need of any assistance). So she isn't asking for anything other than a warm room and a roof over her head.
My wife and I are doing what we can to help and understand the situation a bit better. We are going back over to the house to speak with the landlord/owner of the house at around 6PM when she gets home from work. It is illegal to kick any rent paying tenant out onto the street simply because she wants more rent money. As much as we helped calm the woman down, she will definitely need to find another more stable, permanent residence so any input or referral is greatly appreciated!!!!
