My name is Taylar Graves, I am a second year nursing student at McMaster University. I am excited to announce that I have recently been accepted to the Volunteer Eco Students Abroad (VESA) program and will be travelling to Fiji for 3 weeks this coming April to take part in a sustainable community development program.
I am seeking sponsorship to enable myself to participate in the program and complete essential volunteer work in a Fijian village. VESA and myself will be working in conjunction with the villagers and the village chief in addressing the major issues faced by the village and the local schools such as lack of fresh running water, rundown schools, and generally poor infrastructure. Your donation will help to facilitate the means for implementing a major community development project, which will encompass construction in addition to educating the community on matters of conservation, sustainability, health/hygiene, and English proficiency.
The second part of my volunteer work involves working under the guidance of a marine biologist, gaining a greater understanding of Sea Turtles and the ecosystems that they inhabit. The work I will be doing includes sea turtle conservation projects as well as the harvesting and replanting of a variety of coral. This work will allow me to help recover the South Pacific Ocean marine life after devestating tsunamis in previous years.
You generous donations will be directly assisting with my personal costs involved in participating in the program. These costs are significant and include the following:
- Building materials needed for volunteer project
- Hiring local skilled trades people to assist in the volunteer projects
- A monetary donation to the local host organisation
- Supplies and guidance for turtle conservation and coral replanting
- Sponsorship of local children and families
- Personal Airfare
- Travel Insurance
- Vaccinations
- Food, clean drinking water, and accomodations
