100 x 100 Backpacks for Asylum Seekers

Soroptimist International Sydney has leapt into action helping asylum seeking families. In partnership with the Asylum Seekers Centre we have committed to providing 100 school backpacks for children in these families so they can start school in 2022 with a backpack on their shoulders, and a smile on their faces just like every other student.
In that backpack will be all they need: a lunch box and drink bottle, stationary, pens, lead and coloured pencils, highlighters, felt tipped pens, sharpener, eraser, ruler, calculator. scissors, ruler, geometry set, calculator or scientific calculator for older students, the list is long and multiples of some items are needed to last the year. the contents will be adjusted according to their age and stage of schooling. The cost is an average of $100 per bag.
Soroptimist International is a women's service organisation. In a nutshell, SI undertakes projects in accordance with the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Primarily, our focus is on education, health and social welfare including homelessness, housing and the elimination of violence towards women. We aim for peaceful communities worldwide, by making small changes at local, regional and international levels.
2021 marks SI's 100th birthday, and SI Sydney's 84th. This project is in celebration of SIs centenary with a view to a bright future for families experiencing economic hardship while seeking asylum in Australia.
