Meet the Curiel Maldonado family. They embody strength, love, faithfulness, resilience and courage.
Three years ago, at the age of 10, Rene Curiel, the oldest of 3 boys, began a fight with bone cancer. The family eventually had to make the painful decision to amputate his right leg in order to try to stop the cancer from spreading. Rene continues with his health battles and with adjusting to his prosthetic leg. As a growing boy, this has not been easy, but he has demonstrated strength and persistence in the face of adversity by moving forward despite many challenges and seemingly endless doctor visits.
Two years ago, a new battle was beginning. Nicholas Curiel Maldonado, the second of the three boys, was diagnosed with Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (a cancer of the brain) at the age of 8. He too endured endless doctor visits and underwent a variety of treatments including radiation, chemotherapy, and immunotherapy. On Monday, October 25th, 2021, Nicholas, a beloved son, brother, friend and student, passed away after his two-year battle with cancer.
In 4th grade, when asked his favorite quote, Nicholas typed, “Stay brave.” Nicholas consistently emanated bravery, along with positivity and joy, despite the challenges and difficulties he faced. He was a friend to all, a kind and empathetic soul who made every classmate feel valued and loved.
The family is of modest means and are working hard to give their remaining children a better life. They have had - and will continue to have - both emotional and financial challenges that no family should have to endure. Please support them as they continue to fight to make their family’s dreams, hopes and wishes come true.
