My name is Rowen Martinez, a physical therapist who works with sick veterans in Houston, Texas. But enough about me.
I created this fund to seek assistance for a friend in need. Janet Coyoca was the first girl I ever met when, at 22 years old, I left the Philippines and moved to Lebanon, Missouri, a town of 10,000 people. The moment I met her she immediately made me laugh and eased some of the homesickness I felt. She helped me and 3 other new PTs get adjusted through some challenging times with her outgoing personality and comedic skills.
Much later, she got married and had a miscarriage before finally giving birth to the love of her life, Sofia, now 8. She and her husband moved to his native Bulgaria but the marriage fell apart. Wanting the best for her daughter, Janet returned to California to start a new life.
Earlier this year, Janet was diagnosed with Stage IV colorectal cancer, with metastases to both lungs and liver. Her doctors advised her that the first step in the treatment is to stop the spread of the cancer through chemotherapy. So she started her chemo and is now fighting the good fight in spite of some challenges. She had to quit work because she just doesn't have the energy after chemo. She, her mother, and daughter live in a two-bedroom apartment but she is looking at downsizing to a one bedroom. She has had an offer from a family member to move in, but because that family lives almost in San Diego and her apartment, treatment and her daughter's school are by Long Beach, California, she felt that she couldn't go there. She thinks that in all this tragedy, her daughter's only distraction and source of joy are her school and classmates, where she can be a kid and not worry about her mom's health. Because when she comes home, she has to help her mom wrap herself in plastic before showering to protect the catheter port, as well as wash her mom's hair. Because her mom gets too tired to do it by herself.
Whatever money we raise will go towards supporting Janet's care. She is working on getting some financial assistance with social security and employment-based disability benefits, but as we know, red tape tends to tie those things up. The last thing a cancer patient needs is to worry about finances, but even with your generous gift, she will still have to worry about it. So your urgent help is badly needed. And it doesn't matter how much, because in the end, whether it's your prayers, a few dollars, or a lot, just letting Janet know she's not alone will be a tremendous boost to her.
There is so much hatred going on in the world right now, but the antidote to it is love. It would mean so much to Janet to know that people are supporting her so she can be around for a long time for Sofia.
I thank all of you who read this and uttered a prayer. A thousand thanks go out to all of you who send whatever amount you can spare. Peace.
