On Tuesday, September 29, 2015, Norman Bilbo was severely injured in an accident on his farm. He was cutting firewood when a large limb measuring approximately 14 feet long fell onto his back, neck, and head. This resulted in two broken vertebrae in his neck, a broken clavicle, scapula, sternum, and 37 fractures to his ribs. It also caused a severe break in his thoracic vertebra with resultant spinal cord damage. He underwent surgery on Wednesday which stabilized his spine enough for him to be able to sit up. He is now in the intensive care unit at Forrest General Hospital. Unfortunately, this injury has left him paralyzed from chest down. His neurosurgeon, along with the remainder of his medical team, has given us very little hope in the recovery of movement and sensation to his legs, although we are still praying for a miracle. As many of you know, Norman is a great, Christian man that has worked without ceasing even since his retirement. He keeps up a large farm where he cares for his cattle, poultry, and garden. More importantly, he is the primary caregiver to his wife, Sarah Bilbo, who was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 2013. She is now practically wheelchair bound and fully relies on him. They are both retired and on a fixed income at his time.
There isn't another man that I can imagine less deserving of such a devastating injury. 100% of the money raised by this Go Fund Me Account will go toward making the Bilbo home handicap assessable with a scooter for Norman, wheelchair ramps, a lift chair, and other general medical expenses that are an absolute necessity for a paralyzed patient. The money will also be used for traveling to and from Forrest General Hospital, where Norman is currently projected to be for the next month, at the least.
His entire family would like to thank each and every one of you for your prayers during this time: prayers for a miracle, acceptance, and thanksgiving that we still have my Papaw Norman with us. We are overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and support we have felt since the injury. Thank you all for the continued support and prayers.
"I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble, But take heart! I have overcome the world." John 16:33
