In May 2014, at the age of 28, our dear friend Kayleigh was diagnosed with stage 2B triple negative breast cancer. Since that time Kayleigh has gone through two rounds of chemotherapy, several surgeries, radiation, and countless medical tests.
Six weeks ago Kayleigh found out that the cancer has returned as a mass in her chest wall and two small lymph nodes in her lung. Kayleigh is now being treated at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City, where she was accepted into a clinical trial which will include 15 weeks of more chemo (once a week) and three weeks of radiation (every day).
While Kayleigh’s new treatment gives us renewed hope that she will win the battle against this disease, the treatment can only be done at Sloan Kettering in New York City. Kayleigh and her husband, Rob, have been commuting from New Jersey to Manhattan for the past three weeks, sometimes multiple times a week. Once her radiation starts they will have to commute daily. They were hoping to get accepted into the Hope Lodge, which would provide them with free housing while Kayleigh undergoes treatment. Unfortunately, they have not been accepted, and now they are forced into looking at other housing options, which they will have to pay for out of pocket, or choose to commute, which could become very costly over the course of treatment.
Kayleigh began her first of 12 weekly chemo treatments on March 16 but has been in constant excruciating pain for the past couple of months. Our hope is that the chemo and radiation will shrink the tumor, provide pain relief, and rid her body of this disgusting disease.
We started this campaign to give friends and family an easy way to help both Kayleigh and Rob get through this horrible endeavor. What they need more than anything else right now is help to ensure that money doesn’t become a stressor. At 30 years-young, Kayleigh is a courageous and strong woman who deserves all the tools for the best treatment plan, support, and recovery without worrying about how she is going to pay her bills.
This site exists to give those who care about Kayleigh and Rob a way to help and to keep everyone apprised of her treatment as it unfolds.
Thank you so much for making a donation to support Kay and Rob at this critical time. Each and every gift is meaningful, no matter the amount, and will go a long way.
