On Tuesday, 21st October, 2025, we received the heartbreaking news that Wouter had tragically passed away. Our thoughts are with Wouter's partner Johanna, their son Charlie, Wouter's sister and parents, as well as Wouter's many friends.
Wouter started as research fellow in our Imperial lab in 2016 and moved to lead our Crick lab in 2021. He was an exceptionally talented scientist whose work shaped many of our projects and papers, and he trained and supported countless students and colleagues over the years.
But beyond his scientific achievements, Wouter was one of the kindest, most generous, and most selfless people one could hope to work with. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
With the support of Wouter’s family and the Crick, we have set up an online remembrance page so that friends and colleagues around the world can share their thoughts. As you may know, Wouter’s son Charlie is still too young to understand what has happened. We hope that the remembrance page will be a lasting testament to the good things his father brought into our lives, and bring some comfort to him and to Wouter’s family in years to come. Additionally we want to provide some practical support for Charlie and Wouter’s partner, Johanna.
All of the donations to this page will go directly to Johanna and Charlie.
