On average, 63 motorcyclists die on NSW roads every year. More than a third of those collisions are the fault of the other vehicle involved.
My husband, Steven Gates, was one of those fatalities last year.
January 22nd 2015, started out as a normal Thursday where Steve kissed me goodbye and rode off to work. But he never made it to work that day. Instead, I received the phone call every person fears. My husband; the love of my life, my soul mate and best friend had been involved in an accident.
I was then told that he had died as a result of the injuries he sustained. It is alleged that a motor vehicle driver was exiting a side street and did not see Steve riding in their direction. As a result Steve was killed.
To take comfort from this tragedy, I thought deeply about how to honour Steve’s memory and I believe there’s no better way than to use his passion for motorbikes to raise awareness and support for this cause. The Motorcycle Council of NSW have been incredibly supportive to me and I am proud that any donations received as part of “Ride for Steve” will go towards this wonderful organisation to allow them to continue their great work.
My family and I thank you for your support and can’t wait to see you at “Ride for Steve” in May!
Together, we can make a difference.
