My good friend Kerrie and her husband Josh have 4 beautiful children. Nathan, who graduated from Monroe last year and is a freshman at UC, Logan, who is in Mrs. Lawson's 4th grade class, Shelbie, who is in Mrs. Gwinn's first grade class and Landan, who is in Mrs. Strickland's Kindergarten class.
Josh and Kerrie Schaeper's daughter, Shelbie has Turner Syndrome. She has had several echocardiograms of her heart in the past and they were all normal. So when a congential heart defect called PAPVR was found on her baseline MRI it was completely unexpected! Shelbie will be having open heart surgery on June 9th. They will be traveling to St. Louis so that Dr. Manning (who was previously at CCHMC and has experience with operating on girls with TS) can do Shelbie's surgery.
I am setting up this account against the wishes of my friend. If you know Kerrie, you know that she is the most giving, sweetest person and never in a million years would ask for help. But we all need help from time to time and I know what a wonderful community we live in. Kerrie and Josh are going to have to take time off work to travel with Shelbie to have the surgery. They will need to cover food, gas and a hotel while Shelbie is in St. Louis. The plan is to be there for about 11 days. Kerrie is also planning on taking 3 weeks off of work for the surgery and to care for Shelbie. Unfortunately, she will only be paid for 1 week of leave. On top of that, they have an out of pocket maximum of $12,000! As you can imagine, going without pay, traveling and knowing that you will have $12,000 to pay out of your own pocket can be quite stressful. Not to mention on top of your child having major surgery!! I would like to start by asking that we try to cover food, gas and hotel. If we meet this goal, I would like to help cover some of Shelbie's medical bills. Any amount you can give is a gift and will certainly help in this stressful and unexpected time!
Thank you,
Stacey Hodgeman
