Young Scholars of Western Pennsylvania Charter School is a Title 1 school serving students from all over the Pittsburgh area, with over 80% of our students enrolled in the free or reduced lunch program. Every year, our 8th graders are given an educational field trip to celebrate their hard work throughout their attendance at Young Scholars and their promotion to high school. With the hardships that our students have endured over the past few years, the school and staff are determined to begin a new tradition and take our 8th graders on a trip to Disney World to attend the famous Imagineering Workshops! Our hope is that this trip can become the standard for 8th graders at YSWPCS and will act as a culminating STEM project that combines skills from all of their core subject areas and character-building education.
For some of our students, this will be the first time they've traveled by plane or traveled out of state. This enriching experience will be a significant undertaking for the school and a valuable learning opportunity for our students. It will merge project-based learning with real-world application of the core content and character-building skills they've learned throughout their years in our program.
Students will be given the unique, possibly once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to attend Disney Imagineers workshops and learn from experts in the field. During these workshops, students will experience how Disney park designers use creative thinking and problem-solving skills to turn fantasy into reality. The workshop gives students a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to design and run a theme park every day. Our 8th graders will apply skills from all their subject areas to complete projects designed by Disney's Imagineers under the supervision and guidance of some of the best creative minds in theme park design and business.
To prepare for the trip, students will complete projects throughout the year in STEM as well as core subject areas that will apply skills and lead up to the culminating experience. YSWPCS prides itself in STEM education and looks forward to sharing this hands-on, magical learning opportunity with our 8th graders.
YSWPCS’s goal is to raise $10,000 through go fund me to supplement the cost of the trip. All funds raised will go towards travel, stay, and food for our 8th-grade students. Please consider supporting the 8th Graders of Young Scholars of Western PA in beginning this educational and celebratory tradition.
Donation Considerations: As little as $24 can pay for one child's snacks for each day of the trip. Consider donating to support a portion of a student's travel expenses.
Costs per Child: This graph shows the costs contributing to one student's travel expenses. The proceeds from our gofundme campaign will supplement travel expenses along with other fundraisers led by the school.
