Support Sawyer's Journey to Recovery
Donation protected
My brother Sawyer was in a nearly fatal motorcycle accident on Friday, August 30. Thankfully, medics were nearby and he survived despite being given a 10% chance to live. The accident left him in a coma and on life support for several weeks with extensive injuries, including a fractured skull, broken limbs and vertebrae, and traumatic brain damage. He's had numerous surgeries to repair his limbs but ultimately lost his left arm.
As of today, he remains in the hospital with a feeding tube and 24/7 care, but he's finally awake and talking. We're beyond grateful he's alive and optimistic he'll recover from this. But there's a lot of uncertainty about what the future holds.
Because of the severity of his injuries, Sawyer has a very long road ahead of him, including extensive rehab, a prosthetic arm, a specialized wheelchair, and a number of other things we're learning about as we go. The situation has become especially stressful because he doesn't have insurance and Medicaid does not cover any of the things he will need once discharged.
We hope to raise money to help pay for the specialized medical equipment, long-term care, and rehab he needs to start rebuilding his life.
Every positive thought and donation, no matter the size, will make a meaningful difference as he works toward recovery.
We'll be posting updates on his recovery on Mona Patterson's Facebook (his mom), and we'd appreciate it if you could share this campaign with others to help spread the word. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your support during this incredibly difficult time.
10/24/24 Update from Mona
My apologies for not posting an update sooner, things have been rather hectic. Sawyer is home as of Sunday (10/20). He is still in a lot of pain and is taking a lot of meds to keep him stable mentally and emotionally as is common with TBI patients. He is able to speak and interact relatively coherently, although he has trouble using the right nouns which sometimes makes understanding his conversation challenging. He is missing a big chunk of his short-term memories and has trouble with understanding time. An hour is 5 minutes, everything is now, etc. He is ready to have visitors, but anyone who wants to visit must CONTACT ME FIRST to make the arrangements. This is going to be a marathon, not a sprint. There are no words that adequately express my gratitude for the out pouring of support from so many people, so I will simply say THANK YOU!
10/7/24 Update from Mona
He is still on a feeding tube and his right hand is gloved and restrained because of bouts of agitation. He has an attendant 24 hours a day for his safety since he goes in and out of awareness. When I visited Sunday, he was able to have a conversation with me. He still doesn't know/understand what has happened but does understand he is in the hospital and hurt. He is only allowed a few drops of water and ice chips by mouth because the last time he was swallow tested, he aspirated some liquid, so he is due to be tested again today.
