February 13th, 2021 was the worst day of my life as a parent.
My son Colton who is only 29 years old had a stroke right in front of his sister Grace, his 4-year old daughter Rowan and me. This happened only four months after he spent 15 days in the hospital due to being diagnosed with an extremely severe case of ulcerative colitis.
His health is compromised, his spirit is shaken. I continue to pray...
The day of the stroke (hospital stay #2):
Our morning as a family started out so perfect. We all had just finished breakfast, my 16 year old daughter,my son & my granddaughter. Colton turned on some music and laid down stating he had a headache. Minutes later, he was acting strangely: moving abnormally and responding with slurred speech.
Suddenly he lost all movement on his left side so panicked I had my daughter call 911, while I cared for him. The paramedics arrived shortly after and took him to St. Vincent Hospital (the stroke hospital). I got myself together to drive to the hospital when I received a call from the ER asking how long it would be before I arrived there. That is a call no parent wants to receive. Once I arrived, the ER physician quickly showed me the head cat scan with a large clot on my son's brain. I was absolutely terrified!
They had to make sure Colton did not have an internal bleeding (due to his colitis) before being able to administer the drug tPA (Tissue Plasminogen Activator). This drug must be given within 3 hours of having a stroke. I prayed my son would be able to receive the drug and my prayers were answered. After he received the tPA he went up to surgery for the next two plus hours. The day was all surreal. I just kept praying and reached out to family and friends asking them to pray for my Boy. Again God answered my prayers, Colton survived his stroke. He is expected to make a full recovery, which I am more than grateful for!
The thought of not having Colton in our lives paints a very sad and bleak picture. We are all so very thankful for all the medical teams that cared for him that day and gave us all a second chance to continue to be a family.
The medical bills:
With the miracle of him surviving, came the enormous amount of medical bills (over $15,000).
Colton lost his job and health insurance about a month before he was hospitalized the first time with his ulcerative colitis. His illness not only made him lose 40lbs, but also made him lose his hope and bright spirit. He has been placed on Remicade infusion therapy for the colitis for an undetermined amount of time.
His medical bills are piling up and his spirit continues to be crushed.
Who is Colton:
My son has a true spirit in believing he and anyone else can accomplish whatever they set their mind to. That is what makes him a Great Son, Brother & Father.
Colton has a true heart of gold; he is the hardest worker I know; he loves his family and would do anything for us. He has aspirations of going back to college and pursuing a degree in the Trades and Engineering field.
He encourages his sister to do and be the best she can, accomplish her goals and be successful. He loves his daughter and has big plans and hopes for their future together.
My prayer:
I continue to pray that God and caring people will answer my prayers.
I am so very blessed to have a son like Colton and I want to see him have a fair shot in life. He has overcome multiple obstacles before and I know he can do it again, but he will need help.
The money we raise through GoFundMe will go towards his medical bills, so he can focus on getting better physically and continue working on obtaining his goals and realizing his dreams.
