British Studies Abroad 2014

Donation protected

I am an English student that has returned to school after years of being out. I have achieved an English Associate Arts and transferred to San Jose State University to finish up my education with a Bachelors Arts, and then dive into the corporate world in the niches that are available to those in my field of study.

I am six classes away from completing my BA at 35. I know full well that I made mistakes in the past and that I have to live with those mistakes. However, I have been offered the opportunity to travel abroad just before my experience is over and I am forced to bow down to corporate masters.

I do not want this to be another of my mistakes or missed opportunities. I enclose the basic information for my class abroad in hopes that some will see how valuable an opportunity it is and help me in making it a trip that I remember fondly and can tell of to my friends and family without the subtext of "but I had to eat bread and cup o'soups the whole time."

I put this GoFund together based on the suggestion of a friend that volunteered to help aid my endeavor. He believes I have friends and family out there that might be willing to help with a few dollars here and there to make the trip something memorable. I would be grateful of anything you can provide to this end, $1, $5 or even just the change in your pocket after your Happy Meal. Anything helps and I would be grateful beyond measure to any one that helps.

Thank you for helping! I love you all.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course will explore British children's literature in its rich historical and geographical context. Course activities will combine the reading of literary classics with visits to the actual places which generated them and with presentations on various aspects of literature by specialists. We will visit fantasy sites in Oxford associated with Lewis Carroll, C. S. Lewis, J. R. R. Tolkien, and more recently with Harry Potter; cross Pooh Bridge in Milne's Ashdown Forest; find traces of Long John Silver in Stevenson's Edinburgh; and look for Peter Rabbit in Potter's Lake District. In London, we will explore the appeal of Dick Whittington to city apprentices, visit Kensington Garden to understand how J. M Barrie could see Peter Pan in the magical park across the street, walk about the maritime world of Greenwich Village, visit the Old Royal Observatory, and experience a child's wonder of having a foot in each hemisphere at the Greenwich Meridian - and more. Throughout, we will look at how various texts are constructed as literature and how they reflect historical, cultural and psychological realities. Although the course will be organized around a literary understanding of the texts, we will also look some to the fields of education, bibliography, and entertainment.

Additionally - To answer an obvious question, yes I am going with another University for the class. The University of Southern Mississippi is holding this class in a consortium with other schools, including SJSU.
