For nearly a decade, Karla Croqueta has been bringing a smile to audiences across South Florida with her exuberant performances and larger-than-life personality. Now she needs our help.
What started as the need for a somewhat complicated dental surgery has spiraled into a much more severe and urgent circumstance. While waiting for surgery to extract four impacted wisdom teeth (and a fifth damaged tooth), Karla developed Bell's Palsy last weekend, caused by nerve damage. This has resulted in a sudden paralyzation of the facial muscles on one side of her face and also makes the oral surgery much more complicated, specialized, and expensive.
Bell's Palsy can typically take months to resolve fully and can also be significantly impacted by stress. Karla's medical team has recommended a treatment protocol to help her regain complete movement of her face so she can return to the stage.
TREATMENT PLAN
- Dental Extractions with CT Scan and Anesthesia - $4650
- Physical therapy for 8 weeks (3 times a week @ $25/co pay) - $600
- Acupuncture to help promote blood circulation in the face ($175 x 10 sessions) - $1750
- Rest - 3 weeks minimum. While on paper this is free, as a drag queen it means taking time off from her livelihood. This hinders Karla's ability to pay her bills and increases her stress significantly. - $1600 at a minimum
This would come to a total of $8600, but what makes things even more complicated is Karla's car is in terrible shape. The car needs close to $1200 in repairs, but she had put off fixing it to save money for the dental surgery. Currently, she will need to use Uber to get to her appointments half an hour away.
