In June of 2013, my wife Jessica was diagnosed with a stage 4 brain tumor, a giant cell Glioblastoma. It was resected, and she completed 40 days of radiation and a year and a half of chemotherapy. At that time she was accepted as a patient at the Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center at Duke University were she has received scans and updates since the initial procedures, requiring travel from Central Kentucky to Durham, NC on a recurring basis for scans and treatment.
In August of 2018, Jessica was diagnosed with a recurrence of the tumor, which in turn resulted in an increase in the number of visits to Durham. In October 2018 the doctors did another round of intensive radiation on the new tumor. In January, 2019 the doctors performed a biopsy of the new site looking for new tumor growth verses radiation narcosis, there were complications from that surgery that cause seizures and muscle control issues on the left (dominate) side of her body, which resulted in a hospital stay that was unexpected, and continued issues with movement on the left side fo her body.
The bills have been mounting up, gas for the travel of over 1000 miles round trip each time, hotel rooms, food, copays, medical bills, have been compounding for the last six months. Our credit is maxed out, our vehicles are in need of repair or replace with the amount of miles we have put on them over the last 5 years, life still has to go on between doctors appointments. I am proud to say that Jessica, through the recent doctors visits, hospital stay and multiple rounds of physical therapy Jessica is showing up to work as a middle school science teacher every day that she can, outside of the classroom Jessica is also the coach for the school's cheerleading team, who have competed nationally and have received high accolades. She is out of sick leave through the school district and any day that she misses from this point is an unpaid day for her, which compounds the debt problem, that's not to mention the same for me as a middle school music teacher, missing days and taking unpaid leave for those days as well.
We are trying to keep life normal for Jessica, our 7 year old son, keep our students' lives normal by being in the classroom any time that aren't in a doctor's office, and trying to manage home life, getting "life" done with being only person legally able to drive, Jessica cannot drive for at least three months post seizure. We are falling behind in all aspects, I as her husband just want her to be able to fight the tumor without having to fight to keep the bills paid.
If you would like any more information about us, and Jessica's journey please feel. free to contact me.
