Massive May Help TOBFC fund 5 Projects in 4 weeks

This May, TOBFC Ireland wants to run a series of short, but impactful fundraising campaigns, geared to meet specific needs for our partner organisation in Tanzania.

We selected 5 MINI-PROJECTS that TOBFC would like to implement this year. These projects were selected by our Tanzanian project managers who work in the field every day. Our Team believe these mini-projects can make the most impact.

Let’s see how many mini-projects we can fund this month!

Glucose Metre and Strips

Non- communicable diseases are on the rise in the Global South.  It is vital to re-equip our Mobile Medical Clinic with a new glucose metre to not only support populations exhibiting signs of Type II diabetes, but equally to monitor pregnant women, checking for gestational diabetes mellitus.  If unmonitored, gestational diabetes can cause problems for expectant mothers and babies.  These problems include, pre-term birth, serious breathing difficulties, hypoglycaemia and even still birth.

We need to purchase 2 new metres to equip our Mobile Medical Clinic.  By measuring glucose levels, we will be able to connect patients to the care they need.

With €150 we will purchase 2 glucose metres and their necessary strips.

Vaccination Day

In 2020, TOBFC vaccinated 5,819 children with the main infant and early childhood vaccines including, Polio, DPT, BCG, MMR and OPV.  These early childhood vaccines have been instrumental in reducing under 5 mortality rates and improving the health outcomes of children around the world.

€250 helps us vaccinate 250 children, with the entire portfolio of vaccines, improving their chances of survival and helping them thrive.

Haemoglobin Metre and Strips

What causes iron deficiency anaemia during pregnancy?

Your body uses iron to make haemoglobin, a protein in the red blood cells that carries oxygen to your tissues. During pregnancy, you need double the amount of iron that non-pregnant women need. Your body needs this iron to make more blood to supply oxygen to your baby. (Mayo Clinic)

It is essential for our Mobile Medical Clinic and specifically, our Healthy Mamas Program, that we can accurately measure haemoglobin levels in the expectant mothers connecting to our clinic.  This way, we can better support expectant mothers experiencing iron deficiencies.  Studies show that “haemoglobin levels during the first-trimester play a role in predicting the risk of gestational diabetes mellitus, pre-eclampsia and pre-term birth.” (BMC Pregnancy and Childbirth)

The equipping of our Mobile Medical Clinic with a haemoglobin metre will help improve the pregnancy outcomes for the women connecting to our Mobile Medical Clinic.

The purchase of a haemoglobin metre and strips is €250.  Every year, approximately 3,245 women connect to our Mobile Medical Clinic for medical support over the course of their pregnancies,  Therefore, the purchase of a haemoglobin machine will directly benefit thousands annually.

If we recognise an expectant mother is suffering from iron deficiency, we will provide her with the care and interventions she needs to be healthy throughout her pregnancy, including ferrous pills.

PPE

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is worn to minimise exposure to hazards.  For all the services provided by our Mobile Medical Clinic and our Feet First Program, availability of PPE is vital, especially when dealing with serious wounds.  The care of one wound, can use up to 5 pairs of surgical gloves.   The gloves and safety equipment serve to keep the care provider and patient safe.

Therefore, an abundant supply of surgical gloves and masks is imperative for both our Mobile Medical Clinic and our Feet First Program.

With €350 Euros, we will be able to purchase 600 surgical gloves.

Birth Kits

Every expectant mother in Tanzania must arrive at the medical facility with a birth kit.  The birth kit includes 2 pairs of surgical gloves, a plastic dish and a plastic sheet.  For some women, especially from rural communities, the birth kits are expensive and difficult to assemble.

With €400, TOBFC can provide 80 women with birth kits delivered to them.  This will encourage women to connect with the medical facilities in their catchment area, significantly improving birth outcomes.
