On March 26, 1945, Lt. Kenneth Pettit took off in a P-51 Mustang with the 20th Fighter Group. It would be his final mission. Just weeks before the war’s end, his aircraft experienced engine trouble and crashed into a farm near Ipswich. Kenneth was killed on impact.
For nearly 80 years, his story and the sacrifices of the 20th Fighter Group based at King's Cliffe were known to only a few. But thanks to the dedication of WWII veteran Col. Joe Peterburs, who flew alongside Kenneth, and a growing group of supporters, we are working to ensure their legacy is never forgotten. Now, we need your help.
We are raising money to erect a permanent memorial to ensure their squadron’s story will be told for generations.
This includes:
- A permanent memorial honoring Lt. Kenneth Pettit and the men of the 20th Fighter Group
- Educational signage to honor Kenneth, his unit, and the airmen who never came home
- Site preparation and landscaping
